Rescuing the Proverbial Baby || Ben Stewart

Well. We’ve done it. I suppose it was inevitable. We’ve thrown the baby out with the bath water.

It’s understandable: we tend towards one extreme in reaction to another. 

But the true test of a generation’s legacy is not their ability to deconstruct paradigms, throw out what now seems passé, or scramble to the other end of the pendulum. 

Rather, the true test of a generation’s legacy is marked by their ability to preserve those things that need to be preserved. Things which, if lost, will cause culture to erode, things that go deeper than style, nuance, and complexity. 

It’s time for our generation to do a little rescue work. To reclaim and retain some things of high worth that we have allowed slip into the torrents of reactionism.

Here are three:

Holiness

We’ve lost this life-forming concept to the waters of “Legalist,” “Ultra-Spiritual” and “Fundamentalist” to name a few. To rescue and preserve a biblical expression of holiness does not mean we run back to the pharisaical extreme of rule-keeping, list-following, and performance-based Christianity.
